"If you learn SELF CONTROL you can master anything."
But that is the trick though. Self control is this massive things right? Not really. Seriously... just hear me out on this one.
If you try to conquer every thing in your life then, yes... It is massive, hugely daunting and ultimately impossible all in one step. But not if you take it one step at a time. How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time. And that is how you learn self control and ultimately become successful.
In Jeff Olson's book, The Slight Edge, he teaches the principle of simple small steps done every day that lead to your goals. No one looses self control over night, so it makes sense that it will take some time to gain that control. Every great martial artist started as someone that needed practice. And every day they practiced. Some days they missed practice or got hurt and had to rest up for a while, but they got back up and kept going. And each day they took a simple small step towards mastery. And soon Chuck Norris is a world champ. We all know how awesome he is.
I'm also a big Bruce Lee fan. I have been since I could sneak up late to watch Kung Fu movies as a kid. I learned all sorts of things about him over the years, but the my favorite story of Bruce Lee was not about his Kung Fu. It was about how he continued to practice every day at being a father and business man. He was not perfect, but he kept trying and as a result he did more then just kick butt on screen. He worked with all sorts of people to help them learn that Kung Fu was more about a personal journey then anything else.
I will always be thankful to Bruce, Chuck, Jeff, and Dory (Finding Nemo) for the message of "just keep swimming!"
Now its up to you, what will you do today that will start a habit of self control? Keep it small and attainable and build on it each day. You can do it, I believe in you :-)
